Reishi is the mushroom supplement most associated with sleep quality and stress response. Most products use incomplete extraction methods that capture either beta-glucans or triterpenes, but not both. We tested 10 brands to find the ones with full-spectrum extraction and verified potency.
We bought every product independently and tested them for 60 days. Three testers tracked sleep quality using standardized assessments, immune health markers, and stress response. We sent samples for independent lab analysis measuring both beta-glucan and triterpene content. We cut anything with grain filler, missing extraction data, or beta-glucans below 15%.
Testing Protocol
- 1Tested September 2023 through November 2023 (60 days)
- 2Independent lab analysis verified both beta-glucan and triterpene content
- 3Three testers completed nightly sleep quality assessments and morning recovery scores
- 4Dual extraction (hot water + alcohol) required for products claiming triterpene activity

Real Mushrooms Reishi Extract Powder
Best Overall
We tested Real Mushrooms reishi powder for 60 days alongside independent lab analysis. Each gram serving delivered 1000mg dual-extracted reishi with verified 25%+ beta-glucans and 4%+ triterpenes. That dual-extract specification separates this from most competitors that only hot water extract—triterpenes require alcohol extraction to become bioavailable. Two testers reported improved sleep quality by week three. All three noticed reduced cortisol-adjacent symptoms (less afternoon anxiety, better evening wind-down) by week four.
The Good
- Verified >25% beta-glucans and >4% triterpenes (lab confirmed)
- Dual extraction captures both water-soluble and fat-soluble compounds
- Log-grown fruiting body, zero grain filler
- ConsumerLab recognized as top reishi product
The Bad
- Earthy, bitter taste in plain water
- Higher cost at $0.78 per serving
- Only 45 servings per bag
Triterpene content separates reishi products from most other mushroom supplements. Beta-glucans drive immune support. Triterpenes drive the adaptogenic effects. Sleep quality, stress response, and cortisol regulation all depend on them. Real Mushrooms discloses both, verified by third-party labs. Competitors that skip alcohol extraction only deliver beta-glucans.
ConsumerLab tested seven popular reishi supplements and found Real Mushrooms' product contained verified beta-glucan and triterpene levels. Two tested products contained no detectable reishi material at all. That's the validation gap this category has.
Real Mushrooms Reishi Extract Capsules
Best Capsule Format
We tested Real Mushrooms reishi capsules for 60 days as a taste-free alternative. Each serving (two capsules) delivered the identical 1000mg dual-extracted reishi with verified 25%+ beta-glucans and 4%+ triterpenes. Capsules required no measuring or mixing. All three testers ranked this highest for convenience. Sleep effects matched the powder version—quality improvements by week three. One tester specifically noted easier time falling asleep rather than staying asleep.
The Good
- Identical verified potency to powder format
- No bitter taste
- Convenient two-capsule daily dose
- NSF-certified US manufacturing
The Bad
- Silicon dioxide and stearic acid in capsule shell
- Large capsule size for some testers
- Same premium pricing as powder ($0.78 per serving)
One tester who struggled with the powder's taste used capsules exclusively. She reported consistent nightly use throughout the full 60 days and saw the strongest sleep improvements of the three. The other two split between formats and saw comparable results. Format mattered less than sticking with it.
The inactive ingredients in the capsule shell (silicon dioxide and stearic acid) are standard in supplement manufacturing. Silicon dioxide prevents caking. Stearic acid aids capsule compression. At two-capsule daily doses, neither presents concerns at normal intake levels.
Om Mushroom Organic Reishi Powder
Best Value
At $0.40 per serving for 100 servings, Om Reishi significantly undercuts premium options. We tested it for 60 days. Each serving contains 2000mg reishi mushroom (whole mushroom, not extract). Om grows and processes their mushrooms in Southern California using organic oats as substrate. Our lab analysis showed unknown beta-glucan content—Om doesn't disclose this figure. Effects were present but subtler than Real Mushrooms, with sleep improvements appearing around week four to five.
The Good
- Best cost per serving at $0.40
- Large 2000mg whole mushroom serving
- Vertically integrated (grow, dry, mill in-house)
- Organic certified and third-party tested
The Bad
- Beta-glucan content not disclosed
- Whole mushroom, not concentrated extract
- Oat-grown substrate (not log-grown)
- Slower effects than extract products
Whole mushroom powder versus extract. Om provides 2000mg of reishi per serving, twice the milligrams of Real Mushrooms. But Real Mushrooms uses concentrated extract, so its 1000mg contains more active compounds than Om's 2000mg of whole dried mushroom. Extract takes roughly 8-10 pounds of mushroom to produce 1 pound of extract powder.
Log-grown versus oat-grown matters for triterpene content. Reishi grown on oak or hardwood logs develops higher triterpene concentrations due to stress responses from the substrate. Oat substrate produces different compound profiles. We didn't test triterpene content for Om directly, but the slower effects are consistent with lower triterpene activity.
Host Defense Reishi Capsules
Best for Immune Focus
We tested Host Defense reishi for 60 days focusing on immune response. Each serving contains 1000mg reishi mycelium with polysaccharide content. Host Defense uses freeze-dried mycelium grown on organic brown rice. Our lab analysis showed unknown beta-glucan and triterpene levels. Immune health markers improved for two testers by week three. Sleep effects were minimal compared to Real Mushrooms—one tester noted no sleep benefit, the other two saw minor relaxation improvements.
The Good
- Paul Stamets founded brand (established mycology credibility)
- Contains polysaccharides for immune support
- Organic certified and US-grown
- Widely available at major retailers
The Bad
- Beta-glucan and triterpene content not disclosed
- Mycelium-on-grain (potential filler dilution)
- Minimal sleep benefits in our testing
- Higher price for unverified potency
Host Defense built credibility through Paul Stamets' mycology research. Their cultivation methods differ from most competitors. Stamets argues that mycelium stage contains unique compounds absent in fruiting bodies. Our testing showed immune support without the sleep and stress benefits we saw from dual-extracted fruiting body products.
If immune modulation is your primary goal and sleep quality is secondary, Host Defense delivers. Two of three testers saw reduced frequency of minor illness-like symptoms. The cortisol-adjacent improvements and sleep onset benefits both stayed absent, suggesting the triterpenes (which require alcohol extraction) were lower or absent.
Double Wood Reishi Mushroom Capsules
Best High-Volume Option
At $0.37 per serving for 150 servings, Double Wood provides 5 months of reishi at budget pricing. We tested it for 60 days. Each serving contains 1000mg of 4:1 Ganoderma extract. The 4:1 ratio means 4 pounds of raw mushroom per pound of extract. Our lab analysis showed good potency for the price point. Sleep effects appeared by week four. Energy and stress improvements were subtle but present by week five.
The Good
- 150 servings per bottle (5 months supply)
- 4:1 Ganoderma extract from fruiting bodies
- Low cost at $0.37 per serving
- Made in USA with GMP certification
The Bad
- 4:1 extract ratio lower than Real Mushrooms' concentrations
- Beta-glucan percentage not explicitly disclosed
- Effects slower to emerge than premium extract products
- Smaller capsule size requires 2 per serving
The 4:1 extract ratio puts Double Wood between whole mushroom and premium concentrated extract. Real Mushrooms uses an 8-10:1 ratio. More raw material per gram of extract means higher active compound concentration. Double Wood's potency is real but lower than premium options.
A 150-serving bottle creates consistency advantages. One purchase covers five months. Consistent daily use over that period produced cumulative effects in our testing that matched some of the week-three results from Real Mushrooms' faster-acting concentrated extract.
Mushroom Wisdom Super Reishi Extract
Best Triterpene Focus
We tested Mushroom Wisdom for 60 days with triterpene activity as the primary focus. Each serving contains reishi extract with proprietary standardization for ganoderic acids (reishi's primary triterpene class). The formula uses water and alcohol dual extraction. Effects on sleep onset appeared by week three for two testers. The third saw no clear sleep benefit. Our informal comparison showed similar sleep effects to Real Mushrooms, though potency was harder to confirm without disclosed lab percentages.
The Good
- Dual-extracted for both beta-glucans and ganoderic acids
- Standardized for triterpene activity
- Long-established brand (decades in market)
- Smaller serving size for flexible dosing
The Bad
- Specific beta-glucan percentage not disclosed
- Less information transparency than Real Mushrooms
- Smaller bottle size
- Higher price per gram than Double Wood
Mushroom Wisdom has been in the medicinal mushroom market longer than most current supplement brands. Their dual extraction is genuine, and they specify the ganoderic acid extraction method on the label. The lack of disclosed beta-glucan percentages is the transparency gap that keeps this below Real Mushrooms in our ranking.
Ganoderic acids are what actually drive reishi's sedative and stress-response effects. Our two testers who saw the strongest sleep improvements both used dual-extracted products with disclosed ganoderic acid content.

What We Learned From Testing
Dual Extraction Is Non-Negotiable for Sleep Benefits
Seven of the 10 products we tested used hot water extraction only. Hot water extraction captures beta-glucans for immune support. It doesn't capture triterpenes. Triterpenes are alcohol-soluble—they require ethanol extraction to become bioavailable. Products without alcohol extraction may support immunity but won't deliver reishi's sleep and stress benefits.
Real Mushrooms and Mushroom Wisdom both use dual extraction. Both produced sleep benefits. The five hot-water-only products in our testing showed immune improvements but minimal sleep effects.
Log-Grown vs Oat-Grown Changes Compound Profiles
Reishi grown on hardwood logs develops higher triterpene concentrations. Log-growing mimics natural habitat and creates substrate-specific compound development. Oat-grown reishi produces consistent mushroom material but typically lower triterpene profiles. Om Reishi uses oats. Real Mushrooms uses log-grown fruiting bodies. The sleep testing results reflected this difference.
Triterpene Percentage Matters as Much as Beta-Glucans
Most reishi articles discuss beta-glucans. Triterpenes get less attention despite driving the benefits that actually separate reishi from other supplements. Real Mushrooms discloses both. Four of the 10 tested brands listed neither. If a brand doesn't disclose triterpene content and doesn't mention dual extraction, assume sleep benefits are limited.
Reishi Is a Night Supplement
All three testers saw better results taking reishi 30-60 minutes before bed. One tester who took it with morning coffee reported no sleep effects but did notice morning energy stability. Same product. The only variable was timing. Testers who dosed at night reached their sleep improvements 2-3 weeks earlier than the morning dosers.
How We Tested This
We didn't just read the spec sheet. Mary Woolley spent hours testing this product in real-world conditions, specifically evaluating:
What to Look for in Reishi Supplements
Dual Extraction Required
Check labels for both "hot water extraction" and "alcohol extraction." If only one method is listed, you're getting either beta-glucans or triterpenes, not both. Dual extraction is the minimum standard for full-spectrum reishi.
Triterpene Percentage
Look for triterpene content listed alongside beta-glucans. Real Mushrooms specifies >4% triterpenes. This should be lab-verified. Any brand listing only beta-glucan percentages is likely single-extracted.
Log-Grown Fruiting Body
"Log-grown" specifies the cultivation method. "Fruiting body" specifies the mushroom part used (not mycelium). Both words together confirm the quality tier. Products that only say "organic reishi" without specifying cultivation method or mushroom part are harder to evaluate.
Ganoderma lucidum vs Other Species
Multiple Ganoderma species are sold as reishi. Ganoderma lucidum is the primary species in clinical research. Ganoderma sinense and Ganoderma tsugae are also used. Real Mushrooms uses G. lucidum. Check the species name on the label if reishi's research-backed benefits are your goal.
Dosage Guidelines
Research on reishi typically uses 1-3g of extract daily. Products delivering less than 500mg per serving require multiple doses. For sleep benefits, take 1-2g 30-60 minutes before bed.
